Implementation of Competency Based Medical Curriculum in India: Challenges & Solutions
REVISAR CONGRESO ACÁ
Event Description:
Competency based curriculum in Undergraduate (UG) medical education in India was implemented from 2019. The major changes are introduction of foundation course, early clinical exposure, integrated teaching, skill acquisition and electives. Foundation course of one month is targeted to prepare leaners for the study of medicine. The integrated blocks start from year one and various formats of integration methodologies like sharing, nesting and correlation are being used. Early clinical exposure starts from year one in the form of exposure to clinical context scenarios. There are also self-directed learning sessions for developing life-long learning skills. The assessment changes to formative part largely. The training program for faculty to implement new curriculum was started way back from 2014. There are several challenges when it is being implemented in 550 medical colleges in India. Changing the way faculties teach and assess is a massive exercise. Thousands of faculties have been trained before implementation. The institutional administration as well as the faculty are the key persons who are responsible for on the ground implementation. However, many of these challenges have created opportunities for innovation, research and experimentation in medical education.
